ABOUT WOODMOOR
ABOUT WOODMOOR:   Woodmoor and Indian Spring Village are the largest of the legal subdivisions in the neighborhood referred to as "Woodmoor." Many factors contribute to the sense of
community and neighborhood among the residents.

The geographic boundaries of University Blvd., Colesville Road,Northwest Branch Park and the Beltway define the neighborhood. But it is the pride of the friendly residents that make it special. This is a community where people interact: walking, visiting at the playground, participating in community events, and tending their homes and yards.

The first homes were built in 1938. The community expanded over the following years especially during the post WWII housing boom, when many small but expandable homes were needed. Fortunately, the builders allowed variety and several options, including the sale of adjacent lots so the "tract" look was avoided. A few custom homes were later built on these lots, giving even more variety to the community. Future years brought updates and additions to the original homes.

Children growing up here during the '40`s and '50`s saw the expansion of the local shopping center to a busy commercial area. All kids walked to Pine Crest, "St. B`s", Eastern, and rode the bus to Blair, then Northwood then Blair again. Public school students can now walk to school from 3rd grade to 12th.

A strong sense of community developed through the schools and citizens` association. The Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony is a long time tradition. For many years we`ve had an annual Fourth of July Parade. Other community events include an annual Oktoberfest, Santa visits, Pine Crest/Montgomery Knolls May Fair, and the Spring Garden Tour and Plant Sale. Block parties abound in summer.

Many of the children who grew up in Woodmoor chose to buy a house here to raise their own families. There are still some original homeowners, and many second and third generation families, as well as siblings, living in the community. It is also not unusual to see a family move from one Woodmoor house to another.

Over the years, Woodmoor has had some famous and distinguished residents, including Rachel Carson, Eugene McCarthy, Pulitzer Prize winners, notable authors, a popular musician, a well known news reporter, a Md. State Delegate, and a Montgomery County
Council member. We've had our celebrations of history. In 1981, one of the Iranian hostages who had grown up in Woodmoor came home to his mother`s house. He was
greeted with a festive parade and ceremony. Pine Crest school was selected for a Presidential visit in 1998.
